Beginner - Essential Chess Endings (James Howell). I like the endgame manual by dvoretsky, as you get the most important ideas and tricky examples for their application, although the presentation of the material is not perfect (but didactics in chess books is another case :) ). I think Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual is a must read as well! Intermediate to Advanced - Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual (Dvoretsky). Learn by heart all the 222 obligatory positions from Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual. Throw away the London, c3-Sicilian or whatever rubbish you are playing. If you want to develop as a player, playing main lines is important. One the benefits playes of all level. So I am really eager to start reading what's endgame. This ending appears similar to one covered in Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual as well as (if memory serves) Soltis' Grandmaster Secrets: Endings. The book, Dvoretsky's Endgame Manual 2nd Edition consists of 402 pages with lots and lots of endgame materials. It would be nice if there were a recommended rating range in each chess book to serve as a guide to what material is appropriate for what level. - Fireside Book of Chess (Chernev & Reinfeld).
